A little rain didn’t dampen spirits as members of the USD 287 West Franklin school board and the district facilities committee members prepared to turn over ceremonial shovels of dirt at their official groundbreaking ceremonies on Friday, September 13. There were big smiles all around to commemorate the event.
Mar Lan Construction owners Gale Lantis, Brian Lantis, and Kevin Markley (all alumni of USD 297) were in attendance as well as project superintendent Marty Criqui (also an alumnus) and project engineer Brian Butell.
Voters approved a $13-million bond issue to cover the costs for improvements and upgrades to the middle school and high school in Pomona, Williamsburg Elementary and Appanoose Elementary.
Mar Lan Construction had already completed the work to relocate utilities. Site improvements are underway and preparations for the demolition and construction of a new addition which will add a new gymnasium, locker rooms, music room, weightlifting, shop classes, and a storm shelter for the entire campus.
